What Actually Happens When Your Memphis Wedding Photographer Arrives

Most brides have no idea what their photographer is actually doing all day. You hired someone, you know they'll show up, but what does a full wedding day actually look like from the photographer's side? As a Memphis wedding photographer, here's an honest, behind-the-scenes look at what I'm doing from the moment I walk in to the moment I leave.
Getting Ready (The Hours You'll Be Glad You Have Photos Of)
I arrive while you're still getting ready — hair, makeup, bridesmaids, the whole chaos of it. This is some of my favorite time to shoot because no one is performing yet. You're just existing. I'm looking for the quiet moments: the way your mom zips up your dress, the bridesmaid who tears up before you even walk down the aisle, the ring sitting on the vanity catching morning light. None of this is staged. All of it matters.
First Look or First Aisle? Your Call.
Some couples do a first look. A private moment before the ceremony where you see each other for the first time. Others prefer the traditional reveal at the altar. Both are beautiful and both photograph differently. A first look gives us time for portraits and lets you both decompress before the ceremony. A traditional reveal gives you that unrepeatable, completely raw reaction in front of everyone you love. We'll talk through what fits you best before your day.
The Ceremony (I Promise I'm Not In the Way)
During your ceremony, I move quietly and stay out of the way. I'm not walking in front of the officiant, I'm not blocking your guests' view, and I'm not putting a camera three inches from your face. I'm working the edges, finding angles, and making sure I catch the vows, the rings, the kiss — and every person in that room who has tears in their eyes.
Portraits & Family Formals (Fast, Easy, Done)
Right after the ceremony, we knock out family formals quickly and efficiently. I keep a shot list and move fast so nobody is standing around waiting. Then it's just the two of you for portraits. This is the part most couples are nervous about, and it's usually the part they end up loving the most. We find good light, I give you simple things to do (walk, talk, look at each other), and the photos take care of themselves.
Reception (This Is Where It Gets Fun)
First dances, toasts, cake cutting, dancing! the reception is where the energy is. I'm capturing the big moments, but I'm also watching for everything else: the friend who's crying during the father-daughter dance, the flower girl who fell asleep in a chair, the grandparents slow-dancing in the corner. The night ends and most of the time you don't even remember I was there. That's exactly how it should be.
