How to Actually Choose a Wedding Photographer in Memphis

Picking a photographer is genuinely one of the harder decisions in wedding planning. And I say that as a wedding photographer who knows exactly how many of us are out there.

Here’s what I’d actually pay attention to if I were in your shoes.

Look at full galleries, not highlight reels.

Every photographer has a handful of incredible shots. The real question is what the rest of the gallery looks like. Can they shoot in bad light? Do the candid moments feel real or do they look like they were set up? Are the family formals quick and natural or does everyone look like they’re waiting for a root canal? Ask to see a complete wedding gallery before you commit to anyone.

Pay attention to how they make you feel.

You’re going to spend 8 to 10 hours with this person on one of the most emotional days of your life. If your first conversation feels like a sales call, pay attention to that. If you feel relaxed and like you could just talk to them, that matters more than almost anything else. The best photos come from couples who feel completely at ease, and that starts with actually liking the person behind the camera.

Make sure their style matches what you actually want.

There are a lot of different looks in wedding photography right now. Dark and moody, bright and airy, editorial, documentary. None of them are wrong. But look at a photographer’s work and ask yourself: does this feel like my wedding? Not just pretty. Like mine.

Ask real questions.

Not just what’s in the package. Ask things like: How do you handle a timeline that’s running behind? What happens if something goes wrong? Have you shot at my venue before? The answers will tell you a lot about who you’re actually dealing with.

Find someone who’s genuinely invested in you.

Some photographers treat every wedding like a job to get through. The ones who do their best work are the ones who actually care, who remember what you told them months ago, who check in before the big day, who are rooting for you. That’s the kind of photographer I try to be. If you want to see if we’d be a good fit, I’d love to hear about your wedding.
